Was bedeutet eigentlich Freie Improvisation?

Freie Improvisation ist ein Begriff, der von Musikern oft völlig unterschiedlich aufgefasst wird. Wir kommen deshalb nicht darum herum zu erläutern, was wir bei Music for People darunter verstehen. 

Bernhard Maurer schreibt in seinem neuen Buch «Grundlagen der Improvisation» folgendes: «Improvisation wird meist mit Freiheit in Verbindung gebracht. Sie hat aber genau so viel mit Grenzen und Regeln zu tun. Selbst wenn wir sogenannt «frei» improvisieren, sind uns Grenzen gesetzt. Schon die Wahl eines Instruments oder der Stimme ist eine Begrenzung. Ausserdem bewegen wir uns in der Regel im begrenzten Raum unseres Erfahrungshintergrunds und bedienen uns oft gewisser Formeln, die uns vertraut sind. Die Freie Improvisation ist so etwas wie die Quintessenz der Improvisation. Was sie bedeutet und wovon man frei ist, kann allerdings lange diskutiert werden. Die Einen sagen, Improvisation sei nur dann frei, wenn wir uns von allen «Klischees» loslösen und die Musik im Moment ganz neu erschaffen.

Andere wiederum meinen, freie Improvisation existiere gar nicht, da auch die Musik, die wir spontan erfinden, von zahlreichen Einflüssen und Erfahrungen geprägt ist. Jedenfalls hat sich in den letzten 50 Jahren eine zwar kleine aber kontinuierliche Szene der freien Improvisation gebildet. Dort wird konsequent Musik gespielt, in welcher die Parameter, auf der wir hier unsere Musik aufbauen (Melodie, Rhythmus, Harmonie, Form) aufgelöst oder zumindest für Aussenstehende nicht erkennbar sind. Mutig verfolgen die Vertreterinnen dieser Szene ihr radikales Konzept, ungeachtet dessen, dass diese Musik nur einen sehr kleinen Kreis von Interessierten anzieht. Es ist dies ein bewundernswert idealistischer Versuch, jederzeit komplett «neue Musik» zu schaffen, in einer Welt, wo vermeintlich musikalisch schon längst alles gesagt ist.

Im Gegensatz zu diesen radikalen Konzepten bezeichnen wir als «frei» in unserem Kontext einfach eine Improvisation ohne klare Vorgabe. Das heisst, es hat alles drin Platz, es kann chaotisch sein, aber auch eine strukturierte rhythmische, melodische oder harmonische Form darf entstehen. Nur entstehen die Strukturen im Moment des Zusammenspiels und sind nicht abgesprochen. In der freien Improvisation schöpfen wir am direktesten aus unserer Intuition und aus der Kommunikation mit den Mitspielerinnen. Es ist eine der interessantesten Aufgaben, da wir spontan aus der riesigen Fülle der Möglichkeiten auswählen und die Musik ganz im Moment erschaffen.

Freie Improvisation, wie wir sie bei Music for People verstehen, orientiert sich an folgenden Leitgedanken: Bevor wir mit einer Improvisation beginnen, lassen wir erst einmal los, symbolisiert durch die Release-Bewegung. Damit befreien wir uns von irgendwelchen Absichten, Problemen und vorgefassten Meinungen. Dadurch

kommen wir in die Stille, wie bei einer Zen-Meditation. Wir horchen in diese Stille hinein, welche der Ursprung aller Musik ist. Daraus können dann Töne und Melodien entstehen. Beim gemeinsamen Improvisieren hat uns David Darling immer wieder darauf hingewiesen: «Wenn du nichts sagen willst, biete einfach deine Stille an». Auch Stille ist Musik! Pausen machen die Musik spannend

und interessant. Vor allem lassen sie den Zuhörer aufmerksam werden.

In seinen Kursen hat David Darling jeweils darauf hingewiesen, um was es bei der freien Improvisation im Sinne von Music for People geht: «Etwas vom Wichtigsten, was du in MfP Kursen lernen kannst, ist loszulassen und deinen Instinkten zu trauen. Es gibt nichts zu tun, Es gibt nichts vorzubereiten. Es gibt kein Produkt.

Alles was es gibt ist, sich zu zeigen, klar zu sein und prasent. Schau mal, was geschieht, wenn du das machst, was die Taoisten und Zenmeister 'Ruhig dasitzen und nichts tun' nennen. Das heisst: ruhig sitzen und tief in die Stille hineinhorchen. Du sitzst da und hörst zu, was für Klänge von deinem Atem kommen. Dieser Atem ist unser Zauber, unsere Verbindung mit der Ewigkeit.

Treffender lässt sich dies wohl kaum ausdrücken. Da spielt es plötzlich keine Rolle mehr, wieviel Freiheit in der Improvisation liegt. Es geht nur noch darum, in die Stille einzutauchen und sich von der entstehenden Musik überraschen zu lassen. In diesem Sinne wünsche ich euch allen den Mut und die Offenheit dieses Abenteuer immer wieder neu zu wagen.

What does free improvisation mean?

Musicians often interpret the term “free improvisation” in varying ways. That is why we need to explain what we from Music for People mean when we use the term.

In his book «Basics of Improvisation», Bernhard Maurer writes the following:
«When thinking of improvisation, people usually think it means freedom. But it has just as much to do with boundaries and rules. Even if we improvise «freely», there are boundaries. Choosing an instrument or voice is already a restriction. Additionally, we usually move in the restricted space of our background and experiences and make use of certain formulas that are known to us. Free improvisation can be seen as the quintessence of improvisation. But what it means and what we free ourselves from, those questions are subject of a never-ending discussion. Some say improvisation is only free when we move away from all the «clichés» and create music in a whole new way, in the moment. Others say that free improvisation doesn’t exist, since even music that we create spontaneously is shaped by many influences and experiences. In the last 50 years a small, yet continuous free improvisation scene has developed. There, only music is played in which the parameters on which we build our music here (melody, rhythm, harmony, form) are suspended, or at least not noticeable for outsiders. The musicians from this scene bravely follow their radical concept, regardless of the fact that their music only appeals to a very small group of interested people. It is an admirably idealistic effort - trying to create completely «new music» every time, in a world where, musically, everything seems to have already been said.

Contrary to these radical concepts, in our context, «free» simply means improvisation without specifications. This means that everything has room – it can be chaotic, but a structured rhythmic, melodic or harmonious form is also allowed.

But the structures develop in the moment of playing together, they are not agreed upon or arranged. In free improvisation, we draw from our intuition and from the communication with the other musicians in the most direct way. This is one of the most interesting exercises, because we spontaneously choose from a vast array of possibilities and create music entirely in the moment.»

Free improvisation, as we understand it at Music for People, follows the following main idea: Before we begin an improvisation, we let go, symbolised by the release movement. With it, we free ourselves from intentions, problems and pre-existing opinions. We reach silence, as when practicing Zen meditation. We listen into this silence, which is the origin of all music. From there, sounds and melodies can develop. When we were improvising together, David Darling told us many times: «If you don’t want to say anything, offer your silence.» Silence is also music! Breaks make music exciting and interesting. And they make the listener attentive.

In his classes, David Darling would point out what free improvisation in Music for People is about: «One of the most important things you can learn in MfP classes is letting go and trusting your instincts. There is nothing to do, nothing to prepare. There is no product. All there is is showing oneself, being clear and present. See what happens when you do what Taoists and Zen masters call ‘sitting quietly and doing nothing’. Meaning: sitting quietly and listening deep into the silence. You sit there and listen to the sounds coming from your breath. This breath is our magic, our connection to eternity.»

There is no better way to express it. Suddenly, it doesn’t matter anymore how much freedom lies in the improvisation. It is only about diving into the silence and letting the music that develops surprise you. In this spirit, I wish you all the courage and openness to dive into this adventure time and time again.

¿Qué significa improvisación libre?

Lo que los músicos entienden bajo “improvisación libre” varía mucho. Por eso, necesitamos explicar que es lo que nosotros de Music for People entendemos cuando usamos el término.

En su nuevo libro «Fundamentos de la Improvisación», Bernhard Maurer escribe lo siguiente: «Pensando en improvisación, la gente normalmente piensa que significa libertad. Pero tiene que ver también con límites y reglas, Aunque estemos improvisando «libremente», hay confines. Tan solo la elección de un instrumento o de la voz es una limitación. Además, normalmente nos movemos dentro del espacio limitado de nuestras experiencias, y nos prevalemos frequentemente de ciertas reglas que ya conocemos. La improvisación libre es como la quintaesencia de la improvisación. Pero qué significa y de qué estamos libres – esas preguntas dan lugar a discusiones sin fin. Algunos dicen que la improvisación solo es libre cuando nos liberamos de todos los  «clichés» y creamos la musica en el momento, de forma completamente neuva. Otros dicen que la improvisación libre no existe, porque aun la música que inventamos espontaneamente está marcada por varias influencias y experiencias. En los últimos 50 años, se ha formado un pequeño pero continuo mundillo de improvisación libre. Ahí, se toca sólo música en la cual los parametros en los que basamos nuestra música aquí (melodía, ritmo, armonía, forma) son suspendidos, o por lo menos no reconocible para personas que no pertenecen a ese grupo. Los músicos de esa escena siguen con valentía su concepto radical, a pesar de que esta música sólo atrae a un circulo muy pequeño de interesados. Crear en todo momento «música nueva» es un intento idealista admirable en un mundo donde parece que, en cuanto a la música, ya se ha dicho todo.

En contraste con estos conceptos redicales, en nuestro contexto, «libre» significa simplemente und improvisación sin especificaciones concretas. Eso significa que todo cabe, puede ser caótico, pero también puede surgir una estructurada forma rítmica, melódica o armónica.

Pero las formas nacen en el momento de hacer música juntos, no son arregladas. En la improvisación libre, nos servimos de nuestra intuición y de la comunicación con los demás músicos de la manera más directa. Es uno de los ejercicios más importantes, pues escogimos espontáneamente de una cantidad enorme de posibilidades y creamos música completamente en el momento.»

Improvisación libre, como la entendemos en Music for People, sigue la siguiente idea principal: Antes de empezar und improvisación, soltamos todo, simbolizado por el movimiento Release. Con eso, nos liberamos de intenciones, problemas y opiniones preexistentes. Así, llegamos al silencio, como en una meditación Zen. Escuchamos ese silencio que es el origen de toda música. De ahí, sonidos y melodías pueden surgir. Al improvisar juntos, David Darling solía mencionar: «Si no quieres decir nada, ofrece simplemente tu silencio.»¡el silencio también es música! Pausas vuelven a la música emocionante e interesante. Y hacen atentos a los oyentes.

En sus cursos, David Darling solía advertir de qué trataba la improvisación libre de Music for People: «Una da las cosas más importantes que puedes aprender en los cursos MfP es soltar todo y confiar en tus instintos. Na hay nada que hacer, nada que preparar. No hay un producto. Solo trate de mostrarse, estar claro y presente. Observa qué es lo que pasa cuando haces lo que los taoístas y monjes Zen llaman ‘Estar sentado quietamente y no hacer nada’. Eso significa: estar sentado quietamente y escuchar el silencio. Estás sentado y escuchas los sonidos de tu aliento. Ese aliento es nuestra mágia, nuestra conexión con la eternidad.»

No hay mejor manera de decirlo. De repente, ya no importa cuánta libertad hay en la improvisación. Solamente trata de sumergirse en el silencio y de dejarse soprender por la musica que se forma. Con eso, les deseo a todos la mente abierta y la valentía para lanzarse una y otra vez en esta aventura.
